Growing online game in Portugal

Online gambling in Portugal recorded a growth of 8.6% during the third quarter of last year.

The data was released by the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ) , an organization linked to Turismo de Portugal responsible for supervising and regulating the gambling sector (whether in games of fortune or odds sports betting) throughout the country, in addition to ensuring the practice of responsible gaming.

Sports betting generated 43.5% of that total value in the quarter at 89.8 million euros ($95.3 million), while other casino games represented 56.5% of GGR at 69.3 million euros.

Online slots represented 80% of the volume generated by casino games. Other games such as French roulette (7.6%), blackjack /21 (4.9%) or poker (3.9%) are far behind the first.

Furthermore, the 15 operators authorized in the Portuguese market commercially operate 26 licenses: 11 in the area of ​​sports betting and 15 in games in general.

Of the total number of players who placed bets in the 3rd quarter of last year, 36.1% placed their bets exclusively on odds sports bets, 29.4% played only on games of chance and 34.6% of players had gambling practice (sports bets on odds and games of chance).

Increase in the number of registered and self-excluded players

New operators brought in new players, as the Authority registered 194,700 new player registrations. Compared to the second quarter of last year, 29,000 more player registrations were made in the third quarter of last year. This took the total number of registered players to a record 771,300.

As player registration numbers increased substantially, the number of self-excluded players increased in the third quarter of last year. Around 138,000 of the 771,300 players have chosen to be self-excluded from online gambling; 7.9% of self-excluded players chose a break period, while the remaining 92.1% took an indefinite break.
